Music program

Our music program is an important part of our teaching and learning program at St Maria Goretti’s Catholic School. It has been carefully structured for each year level to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in listening, playing, creating and moving to music.

With weekly music lessons, students are given the opportunity to learn to read and create music and are exposed to many beat, pitch and rhythm experiences. Students are able to demonstrate what they have learnt through performance opportunities at class liturgies, school assemblies and the Catholic Performing Arts Festival.

Recorder is taught in Years 3 to Year 6, while in Year 5 and Year 6 students have the opportunity to join the school choir and the school ensemble.

Language program

Our students learn Italian as a second language from Pre-Primary to Year 6. We use a range of activities such as classroom instructions, stories, viewing, speaking and listening activities to immerse the children in the language.

Students are encouraged to speak in Italian and apply their learning in a range of tasks including role play, dialogue, singing, games and projects. English literacy is reinforced while learning Italian grammar and students use their devices to complete viewing, listening, speaking and writing tasks.

Wellbeing

At St Maria Goretti’s Catholic School the wellbeing and safety of all our students is our highest priority and we take a whole school approach to student mental health and wellbeing. Our comprehensive approach to wellbeing is demonstrated by a number of key programs including PATHS (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies), Keeping Safe and our Mindfulness program.

The programs are integrated into the classroom from Kindergarten to Year 6, and allow students to build important skills including emotional awareness, respectful relationships and problem solving skills.

Visual arts

Our visual arts program aims to engage, inspire and encourage our students to use their imagination in creative and expressive ways. Students learn to apply visual arts techniques, materials, processes and technologies to create artworks through the design and inquiry process. They are able to apply visual language and critical creative thinking skills when creating and responding to artwork.

Students have an opportunity to showcase their talents and skills at our annual art exhibition.
